Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray Player Print E-mail
Sunday, 01 February 2009
ImageWith an MSRP upwards of $1,199.99, the Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player entered the already crowded Blu-ray player market that seems currently divided between high-priced elite models and surprisingly inexpensive entry level models. However, with so many of the more inexpensive models (even below $300) delivering a close-to-complete assortment of features, is the Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player worth its hefty price tag?

The Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player features top-of-the-line video processing with Chroma Upsampling. As a result, you will experience precise pixel detection and 16-step motion video detection, accommodating the 1080p output from Blu-ray discs as well as 1080p output for DVDs, photos, and even personal video data.

The Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player incorporates HD formats, including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio; but has no internal Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio decoders. These are delivered directly through an HDMI cable without requiring conversion to PCM first.  The 5.1 channel output is the anomaly here, as most newer players offer 7.1 for better quality sound.

Bonus View lets you experience capabilities such as the picture-in-picture content now popping up in many Blu-ray releases. The Virtual Package capability lets you combine information from your Blu-ray disc with new content on an SD card for added interactivity. This player is capable of displaying the gamut of formats, including BD, DVD, CD audio, MP3, JPEG, and AVCHD playback through the disc drive, and JPEG and AVCHD formats through the SD card reader. Upside

The top reason to look into the Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player is its seamless integration and installation into most high-end home theater systems with RS-232 and IR in/out ports providing advanced control.

This model works well when paired with receivers that have their own high-resolution audio decoders, delivering Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio over HDMI in bitstream format. In addition, its delivers true high definition 1080p/24 playback for all Blu-ray discs.

Another great extra is an SD card slot for using other media content like digital photos and movies so you can use the Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player with content you download on your computer. Transferring content is easy.

For such a “high end” piece of digital equipment, the Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player is missing many features that can be found even in entry level and more inexpensive Blu-ray players. This includes Profile 2.0 status so you can enjoy downloadable content. While it does have the capability to enjoy picture-in-picture content, it lacks BD-Live since it is also missing an Ethernet port to accommodate downloadable content as well as easy firmware upgrading.

For owners of older, non-HDMI AV receivers, the Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player will certainly cause a lot of problems due to lack of internal high-resolution audio decoders. It is limited to 5.1 channel analog audio outputs so buyers beware. Check your set-up before you make this purchase.

For close to $1200 MSRP, the Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray player is not a good first choice or even a good second choice for a Blu-ray player. You will find more features offered in less expensive Blu-ray players, including an Ethernet port, Profile 2.0 status, and internal audio decoders.

Therefore, this model fails to justify its hefty price tag even if you are looking for something above and beyond entry level Blu-ray players. There are other high-end (and equally expensive or even more expensive) Blu-ray players out in the market today to choose from.
