Polk Announces New Line of Wireless Capable Subwoofers Print E-mail
Monday, 07 December 2009
ImageSubwoofers are an odd and surprisingly hard piece of gear for the average consumer to wrap their heads around.  Maybe some people just don’t know what they do or they don’t think they’re worth the effort. Maybe subs have a bad rap from the absolutely awful rattling and overabundant bass coming from the backs of cars.  Whatever the reason, Polk wants to change some minds. The new line of wireless subs – known as the 440wi, 550wi, and 660wi – are aimed directly at those who still need to put the .1 in their 5.1 or 7.1 setups.   Polk’s VP of product development, Mark Suskind, noted that one of the reasons subs are often ignored is that of cable wrangling.  “Subwoofer cables are often a real annoyance for consumers, sometimes even leading them to bypass a subwoofer and optimum bass performance altogether.”  This, according to Suskind, is why the ‘wi’ line of Polk subs is wireless adaptable.

Don’t let that ‘wi’ moniker fool you though, these subs aren’t wireless right out of the box.  You’ll need to pick up Polk’s audio kit to make it all work.   The $119 addition simply pops into the amplifier plate of the subwoofer, while an included wireless transmitter attaches to your receiver.

The subs start at $449 for the DSW PRO 440wi, which sports an 8” woofer and outputs 360 watts of power.  The DSW PRO 550wi steps it up with 400 watts through a 10” woofer at a cost of $559. Finally, with a 12” woofer and 500 watt amplifier, the DSW PRO 660wi runs $679. The new DSW PRO ‘wi’ subs are set to be available in the spring of 2010.
