Vizio Ends Plasma HDTV Production Print E-mail
Thursday, 12 February 2009
ImageVizio will be exiting the plasma TV sector of flat screen TV production as soon as it sells the last of its inventory.  Vizio is a young company, just over 5 years old, but it quickly gained a large chunk of the flat screen market through its low pricing and big-box retailer deals. Vizio will continue to produce and sell LCD TVs, but it no longer produces plasma displays.  The company website is still selling the units, but there is little left in stock, according to co-founder Laynie Newsome.

The reasons behind this quick pull-out are complex, but Newsome cited consumer preference for LCDs as a driving factor.  He noted that in big-box stores, LCDs often appear brighter and crisper than plasmas because of the fluorescent lighting in these stores that produces glare and dullness on plasmas.
