The Artist Formerly Known as Prince Changes Name Back to Prince Print E-mail
Wednesday, 17 May 2000
Today, T.A.F.K.A.P. (The Artist Formerly Known As Prince) announced he was changing his name back to Prince. In 1993, Prince, who in the late 1980s signed the biggest record contract in history, changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol in order to free himself of the limitations of his recording and music publishing contract with Warner Brothers Records and Warner-Chappel music publishing.

Prince said at a press conference today, "On Dec. 31, 1999, my publishing contract with Warner-Chappel expired, thus emancipating the name I was given before birth Prince, from all long-term restrictive documents."

Prince's re-renaming kicked off a quirky, hour-long news
conference, at which the Minneapolis rocker made an assortment of announcements, including the promise of a weeklong party in his hometown dubbed "Prince: A Celebration." As part of the event, his Paisley Park recording studio will be opened for tours June 7-13, with a special Prince concert set for June 13 at Northrup Auditorium. A new Prince song, "Cybersingle," will also be available on his Web site, as will a modified version of his last album, titled ‘Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic.'

Since 1993, Prince has been criticized by even his most loyal fans for releasing disappointing studio and vault albums like ‘Crystal Ball,’ ‘The Black Album’ and ‘Emancipation,’ which have not lived up to Prince’s prodigious songwriting and performance skills. From 1977 through 1993’s ‘Symbol Album,’ Prince consistently produced hit singles. Does Prince changing his name back and gaining control over his music publishing mean he will produce hit records again? We are betting yes.
