XpanD Debuts Universal 3D Glasses Print E-mail
Tuesday, 16 March 2010
Image“The main problem with display-linked active glasses,” says Ami Dror, CSO of XpanD, “lies within the incapability to use these glasses with a 3D TV that is manufactured by another brand.” He’s right.  One of the biggest complaints that I’ve had about the 3D movement is with the glasses.  Obviously we have to wear them; that’s not going away any time soon. The big problem is that there are so many different standards of glasses.  As Dror puts it, “TV retailers cannot maintain 15 different models of glasses to support 15 different TV brands.”

It’s confusing, and unnecessarily so.  According to Dror, television manufacturers, retailers, equipment renters and other A/V companies have all requested universal 3D glasses, and XpanD was happy to oblige.

The universal glasses use a technology called pi-cell, which utilizes a fast-switching, liquid crystal cell.  XpanD says that these new glasses will be compatible with virtually any display, and won’t require any type of link.  XpanD is releasing these universal 3D glasses in twelve different colors, but so far there’s no word on pricing yet, or an expected date of availability.
