Sony’s New Wireless Standard Means Slimmer, More Reliable TVs Print E-mail
Monday, 08 February 2010
ImageSony announced a new technology today that’s expected to make televisions smaller, cheaper and more reliable.  Rather than focusing on the creation of wireless connections outside the TV, the new wireless technology takes place entirely inside the set. By using antennas only 1mm high, Sony is able to send a signal at 11Gbps at a distance of up to 14mm.  It doesn’t sound like much, and it’s of no use for attaching components or sending high def signals across the room, but that’s not what it’s for.
Sony’s wireless technology is designed eliminate moving parts from televisions, and reduce the footprint of the circuit board.  The less moving and detachable part there are, or the less they get used, the longer the TV will last.

Sony also mentioned that they’ll be able to crank these signals up to 50mm by using high directivity antennas.  There’s no word yet on when we’ll see sets that sport the new wireless technology.   It should also be interesting to see how well these sets work.  When I hear about wireless technology in my TV, the first word that comes to mind is ‘interference’.
