Companies Unite to Create Single License for Blu-ray Print E-mail
Thursday, 26 February 2009
ImageIt's about to become much easier for Blu-Ray device makers to get the license to produce their products.  By the middle of 2009, the three licenses currently required to make a Blu-Ray player or disc will converge into a single license available from a company based in the U.S., according to a statement released by Sony, Philips and Panasonic. The current process requires that companies approach CD, DVD and Blu-Ray patent holders separately in order to obtain three different licenses before going ahead and producing a Blu-Ray player.  Sony estimates that this new licensing process will cut royalty fees down by about 40 percent.

Under this new agreement, licenses for Blu-Ray players will cost $9.50, Blu-Ray recorders will cost $14, and Blu-Ray discs will cost between 11 and 15 cents apiece.
