Samsung LN-T4671F LCD HDTV Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 March 2008
ImageThe Basics:
The 71 Series is Samsung’s top-of-the-line offering in the traditional LCD space. By traditional, we mean that the TV uses a CCFL backlight (the higher-end 81 Series uses LED backlighting). This 46-inch, 1080p model features Samsung’s Auto Motion Plus 120Hz technology, which doubles the TV’s frame rate from 60 to 120 Hz to render smoother motion and reduce the appearance of judder in film sources. Samsung’s implementation includes low, medium, high and off settings.

Other features in the 71 Series include: the use of Samsung’s Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) processing and Super Clear LCD panel, the inclusion of three HDMI 1.3 inputs (including one on the side panel), Wiselink, which lets you display JPEGs and play MP3s via the USB 2.0 port on the side panel, a game mode and slot-style speakers, with SRS TruSurround XT audio processing.

This HDTV offers numerous picture adjustments, including an adjustable backlight to tailor the TV’s brightness and black level to suit your viewing environment, direct access to white-balance controls and your choice of two color-space options: wide for more saturated colors and auto for more accurate colors. It also sports the desired aspect ratios, including a Just Scan mode to display 1080i/1080p images with no overscan.

The Upside:
Samsung’s implementation of 120Hz technology is very effective at rendering smooth motion. The TV produces an attractive HD image, with accurate color (in the auto color space) and excellent detail. It’s capable of a ton of light output, but its black level is also good for an LCD, producing nice contrast overall. Stylistically, this is a very attractive TV, with a gloss-black frame and a swiveling stand.

The Downside:
Auto Motion Plus can make film sources look more like video, an effect some people find distracting. The HDMI inputs don’t do a very good job of de-interlacing and up-converting 480i content. As with many traditional LCDs, the LN-T4671F’s viewing angle is only average, and screen uniformity can be a concern. Samsung’s Super Clear LCD panel can improve image contrast in a bright room, but its light reflections can also be distracting in a well-lit room, especially with darker content.

Auto Motion Plus adds a price premium to Samsung’s 71 Series, but this 120Hz technology is very effective. All in all, the LN-T4671F is a feature-rich HDTV that offers very good performance.
