ImageThe Basics

The Yamaha RX-V1900 Seven Channel Home Theater Receiver falls in the mid-to-high end category for 7.1 channel AV receivers. At a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $1,399.95, this model features 130 watts/channel power, 4x HDMI 1.3a inputs, high definition audio decoding of Dolby TrueHD and dts HD-MA, and video upscaling of 1080p of analog video.

Compared to previous models like the Yamaha RX-V1800, the RX-V1900 also adds HD radio, Bluetooth capability (A2DP with optional YBA-10 wireless adapater), Sirius radio, and an 8 point YPAO automatic system calibration.

The Yamaha RX-V1900 packs a lot of power all packaged in a premium, very minimalist body featuring hidden buttons and AV inputs to preserve its sleek looks. These are all well-camouflaged behind a panel under the display.

The Yamaha RX-V1900 features 192kHz/24-bit DACs for all channels, low-jitter phase-locked loop circuitry, and assignable amps for Yamaha’s trademark presence channels or bi-amplify the front mains.

This model’s 4-in/1-out HDMI can decode all the up-to-date high definition audio formats and also features Pure Direct mode for HD audio and video. The RX-V1900 also does a very good job of 1080p upscaling, breathing new life into your DVD library.  Included with this package are 2 remote controls that are useful for multi-room modes. The Upside

The Yamaha RX-V1900 has pizzazz in both looks and functionality than comparable models in the market (and there are a lot!). It delivers Yamaha’s detailed and enthralling signature sound at the same time capable of being tamed with DSP and manual EQ adjustments. Uncompressed audio codecs especially shine with this model both dynamic and deep.

Amazingly, the surround sound performance can power everything from larger speakers to concert level equipment. The RX-V1900 also features high-performance soundstage and spatial separation for optimum multi-channel reception.  While the RX-V1900 does “upgrade” or upscale video, a feature in many new AV receivers today, it shows its true value working with HD content, delivering crispness and depth that high definition promises.

The Downside

Despite its minimalist looks, the Yamaha RX-V1900 lacks setup and onscreen menu simplicity that seems to be unfortunately inherent in many Yamaha products. In addition, the included remotes won’t be satisfactory for long-term use. Therefore, many home theater enthusiasts should opt for third-party universal remotes.

Since the RX-V1900 will probably be a proud part of your home entertainment system for years to come, replacing these cumbersome remotes (especially the smaller-sized second remote) is a must. Furthermore, it would have been great to be able to have iPod connectivity from the start. However, this is only possible with an optional dock interface.

Despite a few downsides, the $1,399.95 Yamaha RX-V1900 Seven Channel Home Theater Receiver is a solid competitor. This model’s performance far outweighs its price with a well-designed and function-loaded receiver. In fact, all of the downsides mentioned above can be easily (and more importantly, cheaply) remedied from lackluster remote controls to adding an iPod dock.  The RX-V1900 comes highly recommended for your home entertainment enjoyment.
