Eric Clapton & BB King - Riding with the King artist: Eric Clapton & BB King function popUp(URL,NAME) {,NAME,'location=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=yes,toolbar=yes,resizable=yes,width=380,height=450,screenX=10,screenY=10,top=10,left=10'); amznwin.focus();}; document.write(""); document.close(); album: Riding With The King format: DVD-Audio label: Reprise Records release year: 2001 performance: 8 sound 7 reviewed by: Richard Elen This collaboration between two living legends, B.B. King and Eric Clapton, is obviously a good idea in principle, with arguably the best traditional and contemporary electric blues guitarists getting together in front of a band of top-class musicians. The original stereo CD (2000) won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album, debuted at #3 in the charts and went double platinum, so I guess other people thought so, too. But if you had never heard this album before, how would you think the collaboration would work?

Shankar & Gingger - One in a Million Silverline performance 6 sound 8 release 2001 Another finely-crafted surround mix by Gary Lux at 5.1 Entertainment (aka Silverline) here in West LA characterizes this otherwise quite unusual release, One in a Million from Shankar & Gingger. As I’ve noted before, it’s the small companies that are really delivering the goods when it comes to high-quality audio discs, and 5.1/Silverline is one of the leaders. One thing you can be certain of with their releases is that they're going to sound great.

Glen Phillips - Abulum artist: Glen Phillips function popUp(URL,NAME) {,NAME,'location=yes,scrollbars=yes,status=yes,toolbar=yes,resizable=yes,width=380,height=450,screenX=10,screenY=10,top=10,left=10'); amznwin.focus();}; document.write(""); document.close(); album: Abulum format: DVD-Audio label: Silverline/5.1 Entertainment release year: 2001 performance: 0 sound 0 reviewed by: Richard Elen I was never a great fan of Toad the Wet Sprocket (and you thought "Traveling Wilburys" was a funny name…), but it was evident even to me that Glen Phillips had more to say than most artists using the by-then-rather-tired "alternative" label. After the band came apart in 1998, he seemed to go silent, but here he is, back with a solo work that is worthy of attention even if you didn’t go for the band from whence he came.

Various Artists - Inside the Music: New Age Inside The Music, New Age (DVD-A/V), Silverline/5.1 Entertainment, 2001 | Performance 8 | Sound 8 | This album is one of a fairly enormous series of "DVD Music" compilation albums being released by Silverline, one of the labels of 5.1 Entertainment Group, founded by – among others – Fleetwood Mac engineer Ken Caillat. The series as a whole spans all kinds of music. There are also a number of other DVD-A releases on this label, including classical albums featuring specific works, rather than compilations like this one. There are additionally a number of DVD-Video-only series.

Guarneri String Quartet -Ravel/Debussy/Fauré SurroundedByEntertainment performance 9 sound 8 released 2001 This recording of the Guarneri String Quartet playing Ravel, Debussy and Faure is another fine release from Surrounded By Entertainment. On the DVD-ROM area, the disc includes the "Scrapbook," a photo album spanning the quartet's 37-year career, plus biographies on each composer and the quartet, a complete discography, session photos documenting the creation of the project, and Web links. The total playing time is over 75 minutes.
