No matter how many stories I have written about how screwed up the music business is – there is hope and it is coming June 8th in the form of a new album from Velvet Revolver entitled CONTRABAND. Much like Rage Against The Machine retooled with Chris Cornell as their frontman – Velvet Revolver is a hard rock band now comprised of Stone Temple Pilot’s frontman, Scott Weiland along with former Guns ‘n Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum.

American Idol reject, William Hung’s uncanny success is a reminder to consumers of how poorly the music industry is doing finding significant new acts and artists to sign. According to Koch Records, Hung’s label, he has sold 37,676 copies of his debut album “Inspiration” in its first week on the shelves landing it a spot at number 34 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. This is from a performer who couldn’t find a tune with radar.

The Los Angeles Times today is reporting that Universal Music Group, the largest record conglomerate in the world, has announced an increase in the prices of their CDs. This comes only months after UMG slashed prices in order to make CDs more competitive in a marketplace that features pay downloads as well as the dreaded “free” (or as record executives and the RIAA like to call them “illegal” downloads”). Representatives from Universal Music Group were not available for comment at the time of publishing.

It was ten years ago today that grunge guru Kurt Cobain reportedly committed suicide in his Seattle home. Quoting Neil Young in his suicide note, Cobain wrote: “its better to burn out than fade away” right before he allegedly held a gun under his chin and pulled the trigger to end his life. He was 27 years old, the same age as famed rock stars Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison when they died. Cobain, front man of the band Nirvana, has been credited with popularizing grunge rock. The group, formed in the late 80s, only came out with three major-label albums during their duration including the massively popular “Nevermind” in 1991. "Rolling Stone" magazine rated Nirvana as the #27 Greatest Artist of all time, sandwiched between The Ramones at #26 and Prince at #28. Dave Grohl, Nirvana's drummer, has since gone on to head the band Foo Fighters.

A group of record labels and punk artists have mobilized a tour of punk artists designed to create youth awareness to the power of voting. A very well done site was posted at which makes a very liberal yet well thought out argument against war and other Bush Administration policies from the prospective of American teenagers. Celebrity articles come from members of the bands Pennywise, Bad Religion and Dead Kennedy’s frontman, Jello Biafra (Eric Boucher). The Punk Voter – Rock Against Bush Tour launched yesterday featuring a lineup of Jello Biafra, Authority Zero and Alkaline Trio. The tour will hit a number of cities in the west and southwest in the coming weeks.
