Ask any record company suit about why record sales are down from 30 billion dollars per year to 18 billion and they will instantly start in on the effects of Napster, peer-to-peer sites and piracy. And they are wrong. The modern fall of the record business as we know it is based on the rise in popularity of DVDs and video gaming, paired with the poor entertainment value associated with a mainstream compact disc.

My dad tells legendary stories of growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia as a teenager in the 1950s who mowed neighbors’ lawns for pennies and then walked (sometime on his hands, uphill both ways in three feet of snow) to a store called EJ Korvette’s in order to buy one new record. His sacrifice allowed him to develop a collection of 45 RPM records from the Big Bopper, Buddy Holly and beyond, for which he played radio DJ on his record player at home for hours upon hours.

I have long contested that rap music isn’t really music. Stealing a James Brown or Parliament Funkadelic melody and spewing ghetto poetry on top of endlessly looped rhythms isn’t exactly creative, but no critic of rap can deny its commercial and popular appeal, especially in urban environments. It turns out that mega-burger slinger McDonald’s is looking to parlay the urban appeal of rap into a summer promotion for the restaurant’s legendary Big Mac sandwich, according to the March 23, 2005 issue of Advertising Age Magazine.

One half of the two part metal guitar assault known as Korn has left the band to peruse more heavenly goals. Guitarist Brian “Head” Welsh announced that he is parting ways with the successful new metal band Korn to dedicate his musical pursuits to his lord and savior Jesus Christ. The band announced on their website that they fully respect Welsh’s decision and hopes he finds the happiness he is searching for.
