When Michael Bay was brought on to direct a live action rendition of the beloved Saturday morning cartoon Transformers, emotions ran high among the series' fans. Bay is a divisive director and many felt he couldn't pull it off. When design sketches from a production laptop were leaked, people really went nuts. They couldn't believe the changes that Bay was making to the franchise they grew up with. Optimus had flames on his side when in truck form? Megatron looking like Treebeard? What the heck was Bay up to?

Of course, as we all now know, Transformers turned out to be a really fun movie. It wasn't perfect (why on Earth was Anthony Anderson in there?), but it was a surprisingly good time at the movies. Since then, co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman were hired to pen J.J. Abrams' reboot of Star Trek, and it appears that their enthusiasm shifted entirely to that project, because while Star Trek is a brilliant piece of updated sci-fi, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen drops the ball at almost every opportunity. I guess the fans' fears were justified; they were just one movie off.

Transformers 2 slide

After the events of the first film, Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) is preparing to go to college. He's still got his trusty Camaro/giant robot Bumblebee, but plans on leaving Bumblebee behind so that he can try and lead a normal college life. He's also leaving behind Mikaela (Megan Fox), albeit much more reluctantly, and plans on keeping up a long distance relationship with her. But when he encounters a tiny sliver of the Allspark Cube, he begins to see strange symbols and can't keep his focus. Meanwhile, the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) have extended an open invitation to all of their bretheren to take refuge on Earth. The Autobots form an alliance with the US military, helping them weed out the remaining Decepticons. Things take a turn for the worse as Megatron (Hugo Weaving) is resurrected, and an even greater threat is discovered.

The great thing about Transformers was that there was a relatively small group of robots, and you came to care about each of them. And while there was an unweildy group of humans, they got enough screen time that you cared about most of them as well (again, ignoring Anthony Anderson). Revenge of the Fallen, in its attempt to up the ante, loses sight of the characters. We've now got dozens of Autobots and Decepticons, and the only ones who get any substantial screentime are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, the titular Fallen, and two unfortunate new characters known as Mudflap and Skids. Shockingly voiced by the normally hilarious Tom Kenny, the duo are a sickening amalgamation of every black hip hop stereotype you can think of, with one of them even sporting a gold "tooth." I don't think it's unfair to say that with these characters, Revenge of the Fallen enters Jar-Jar Binks territory.

Transformers 2 Megan Fox

And that, in a nutshell, is the problem with the picture. For everything they do right, they do two things wrong. The humans we did care about in the first film often become inconsequential in the second, shoved to the sidelines in favor of a globe-spanning plot that is at best weak, and at worst incomprehensible. The character dynamics are meager, especially between Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox. And while Shia's blustery but awkward charm worked last time, it just becomes annoying here, especially as he tries to grow the character into a true leader. It doesn't ring true. Of the humans, the only ones I cared about were Sam's parents and John Turturro's Agent Simmons. And once again, the creative crew felt it necessary to toss in more unecessary characters, this time in the form of Sam's college roommate, who does nothing but pad the run time.

And honestly, this movie is way way WAY too long. It's two and a half hours but it feels like four. There's too much of everything except quality storytelling. Did we need a little RC car that humps Mikaela's leg? Did we need a giant robot with wrecking balls for testicles (no, I'm not joking, but I really wish I were)? Practically the only things they got right was Soundwave, who spends the movie linked up to a US satellite in space, and Starscream's sniveling subservience to Megatron. Megatron, by the way, is reduced to the level of enforcer, becoming no more of a threat than any other regular Decepticon, and in the process being stripped of mystique. It's sad to see.
transformers 2 explosions

The action doesn't feel as tense as in the last movie. Even when Bay cuts to full IMAX footage (a la The Dark Knight), the effect falls flat. Bay's use of the format is not as inspired or as effective as Christopher Nolan's, and while the IMAX sequences in The Dark Knight were dynamic and integral to the telling of the story, the IMAX shots in Revenge of the Fallen feel like an afterthought or even worse--a gimmick. There was only one fight where I was excited or even interested. Instead of engaging the audience and drawing them in, Bay keeps the viewers at a distance and beats them into submission with sensory overload. I know Bay has been accused of this sort of thing in the past, but on a canvas this big, it really hits home how inadequate the action actually is.

It really is a shame that such a promising franchise took a turn for the worse so quickly. I haven't even scratched the surface of groan-worthy moments in the movie. The only truly redeeming feature is Sam's parents. Played by Kevin Dunn and Julie White, the pair provide the movie's only genuine moments of entertainment. There is a tantalizing scene where they are vacationing in Paris, having unburdened themselves of Sam's presence, and I swear that all I could think of was a spin-off, Witwickys In Paris. It would be everything that Revenge of the Fallen is not: Funny, to the point, and enjoyable. If you liked Transformers, you might get a thrill out of spotting the new characters and some new robot-on-robot action (no, not that kind, you perv, although that sort of mentality would not be out of place with the juvenile attempts at humor littered throughout the flick), but more likely you'll come away disappointed and angry, just like I did. If you didn't like the first, then there is absolutely nothing to recommend about this entry. Witwickys In Paris, on the other hand...

ea, we get it..you disliked the movie. Were you raped by a man in a robot
costume when you were little? Seriously, you went way overboard with the hate.
Duh, its a MOVIE.  - Revenge of the Fallen   |2009-06-24 18:37:21
Yes, we needed to see the RC car humping her leg, it's what every red blooded
American WITH A PAIR wants to do. It was a way better show than the flower
wearing reviewers would ever lead on. Maybe the wrecking balls were a little
much, but it helped John Turturro add some levity to the movie. Go back to
watching Mama Mia movies and leave action films alone! It's a MOVIE, it isn't
real. If you like power puff girls go to that movie, not a fan of Transformers
as a kid, then don't judge this one.
robrod  - really?!?! ... how can you not have fun with this   |2009-06-25 16:54:36
Looked great... check
sounded amazing... check
robots fighting .. check
megan
fox (hot!).. check
Optimus prime kicking butt with upgrades... check

The
story was no weaker than the first film, and the only racist view was you
assuming that the new robot were based on black people.. because God Knows white
people dont talk like that!

I get it, its not "art" , but it was fun,
and a total kid fantasy come to life. It was pretty amazing the scope of this
film and how real the robots did look on screen. We're talking about a movie
based on toys. All I now is when I played with transformers as a kid, the
battles in this movie are excatly what I imaged a robot fight to be. If I had
to toss something out of this film, it would be the two stupid dogs, and the
butcher with the bad teeth.. but they were in the film, what 10 seconds tops..
so big deal.

Daniel, lighten up.

Lighten up. It's just a review. If you liked it, good for you. I for one hope
that the next film will actually be enjoyable, the way the first one was.
Jim Robbins  - Agreed     |2009-06-26 07:22:41
I guess I'll have to agree with Mr. Hirshleifer. I had major sensory overload.
I was fortunate enough to watch this movie at my favorite theater which has the
best picture and sound I have found. However, great images and sound can't
account for the sensory overload. That is the EXACT phrase I was looking for.
My ears hurt by the end, and that never happens as that theater. I couple of
juvenile jokes here and there are fine, but there were just too many. I like
hot chicks as much as the next warm blooded American Male, but humping her leg
with a little robot? Come on, no one wants Megan Fox like that! Mr.
Hirshleifer didn't mention just how many movies are rolled into this one so as
to not spoil it for you, but I am sure when you watch it, you'll see for
yourself. I was disappointed, and I pretty much love all movies. I also
usually hate bad movie ratings, but this was just too much, too loud, too fast!
I guess I was hoping for more plot development and less blurry robot fighting.
Oh well, it's just a movie, some good, a little more bad, but still a movie.
Enjoy!
Rene Requenez  - The Script Felt Rushed   |2009-06-28 09:58:37
Although the first TRANSFORMERS movie was a slight departure from how the
Autobots and Decepticons originally came to continue their battle on Earth, the
first live action movie nevertheless held on to much of the spirit found in the
original series. Human characters that were never brought up in the animated
series worked well in the movie, and I could even overlook the omission of
certain character interactions and details from the original series that
would've enhanced the movie even more, such as Starscream's whiny and oft-times
backstabbing behavior and Megatrons strong and condescending attitude (some of
which I'll admit was in the movie, but not like it could have been). Overall,
the first movie had a great story and introduced characters well.

REVENGE OF
THE FALLEN had everything going for it except a good script. I agree with every
negative criticism stated in the article. Let me just add that part of the
reason I think this second movie is somewhat of a flop compared to the first is
that the writers went a little too far in the first movie, leaving little room
to work with or develop anything really new in the sequel. Here are some
mistakes I saw from the first movie that, had they been omitted or changed,
would have made sequels much easier to work with:

#1. ORIGINAL AUTOBOT AND
DECEPTICON CHARACTERS should have been the only transformers shown; this would
have made it more thrilling to introduce other transformers like The
Constructicons (which can merge into Devastator) and Omega Supreme. I mean,
just think of the possible storylines that the introduction of these two
characters alone could inspire. Future sequels could have introduced other
hybrids of transformers, such as the Stuntacons, Aerialbots, etc.

#2.
CYBERTRON SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN DESTROYED because this kind of kills the idea that
both Autobots and Deceptacons need Earth's resources to harvest precious Energon
Cubes to sustain their battle and themselves. The All Spark idea was admittedly
pretty good, but too powerful. Wasn't there an episode in the animated serious
that suggested that transformers had souls, or an essence similar to a soul that
could be removed from a body and kept in storage? It was a two-part episode in
which Starscream goes out on his own and frees some deceptacon "souls"
that had been imprisoned for war crimes and from these souls creates the
Combatacons.

It's going to be difficult turning this franchise around unless
it can be resurrected using a storyline closer to the animated series and ported
into a high quality 10-episodes per season HBO series.
Raneem Cullen  - well..   |2009-06-30 01:47:18
i actually liked the movie, but it was kind of long, and one thing that was kind
of...dumb, was that why they killed optimus, in the end EVERYONE could have
predicted that somehow they would bring him back to life, it wasnt confusing it
was just i think they should have put more thought into it, it was GREAT and
hilarious haha, but needed more to it (:
Brent  - Couldn't get into it.   |2009-07-02 08:00:08
I couldn't get into the movie. Mr. Bay failed to draw me into the movie in the
first 20 minutes or so. After that I knew I was in for a long boring show.

Megan Fox may be hot, but she is not a good actress. I also can't get past
some of the pinhead comments she made in the recent past. Therefore, I don't
enjoy movies with her anymore.
Mr. Bay seems to like to film all of his movies
at the same place - Edwards AFB in California's Mojave desert. A great place,
but I get distracted with memories of being stationed there when I was in the
Air Force. I even watched him film parts of Armageddon. I wish he would film a
movie somewhere else for once.
One of thethings I really did not like about
the movie is how he showed a lot of the Air Force arsenal and didn't really put
the aircraft into action. We saw the aircraft take off. We saw them bank to the
left, bank to the right. We saw F-16, F22, A-10, unmanned aircraft, cargo
aircraft....WTF? A lot of that was unnecessary footage. The aircraft didn't even
engage in combat. I even saw one F16 with a training missle loaded onto it. It
sucks knowing reality sometimes.
Most of the airfract scenes didn't even make
sense or add to the story line.
I also wholeheartedly agree with Daniel's
review. I would have said the same thing had I did the inital review.
Marcus  - Mr.     |2009-07-08 08:58:05
This movie was terrible. Bad, bad, bad. One star is too much.
avjones  - I'm down with Daniel...   |2009-07-14 20:26:35
...regarding his review. It's the best review I've read outlining my problems
with this sequel. I thought the first movie was better than it had any right to
be, it surprised and entertained me. I saw this at a free screening and the
two-and-a-half hours just slogged by. Bigger, louder and faster do not make a
better movie. I also have to empathize with Brent's views. I was never in the
military, but I have respect, and I didn't think Bay was respecting the military
when Megatron rose from his watery grave and tore through the sub. All I could
think about were the soldiers' lives lost. Yeah, I know it's a movie, but
there's a line that can be crossed where destruction is no longer entertainment.
Michael Bay's movies seem to take me to that point. The last time I felt like
that was during his "Armageddon". I like the idea of doing the
Transformers as a miniseries. Bay has said he's done with the franchise for a
while, I sure hope so.
