As it tends to be when a new technology hits, it’s a problem of the chicken and the egg.  People don’t want to buy 4K capable hardware when there’s no content for it, and companies don’t want to make Ultra HD content when no one has a UHD set.  Sony is in a fortunate place in that their company makes not only hardware, but content as well.  Their new XBR-84X900 reflects that, by including content with the TV itself.

Vudu and Netflix are two distinctly different services with distinctly different focuses.  Netflix offers quantity while Vudu focuses on quality, Netflix is more about disposable content while Vudu wants you to buy.  They’re also very different in that while Netflix started on the PC and eventually moved to the living room, Vudu has, since the beginning, been made for TVs.  Thankfully, that’s changing.

Ultra High Definition televisions are quickly on the way and the folks at Hisense are jumping on board with their own offerings.  There's nothing that truly sets the Hisense TVs apart from competitors in terms of feature set, but there are two considerations that may make Hisense a player worth keeping an eye on in the upcoming struggle for UHDTV dominance.

'The Hobbit' is one hotly anticipated film.  Not only is it another opportunity to see Peter Jackson tackle some Tolkien, but it's also a film that's pushing the boundaries of technology.  Over 450 theaters will be showing the hobbit with HFR – that's 48fps high frame rate – and a decent chunk of those will be adding Dolby Atmos surround sound to the mix.

The impressive Atmos sound technology from Dolby has just been attached to another major firm – 'Star Trek Into Darkness.'   The followup to the incredible J.J. Abrams reboot of the Star Trek franchise will take advantage of everything Atmos has to offer, immersing audiences in sound and creating pinpoint audio locations.  In other words, when the Klingon Bird of Prey passes overhead, you're going to want to duck.
