is reporting that Toshiba, the company most pushing for success of the
HD-DVD video disc format, has said they plan to delay the U.S. consumer
launch of the product. This news comes as the competing HDTV disc
format, Blu-ray, gains Hollywood and Silicon Valley momentum.
Just last week, talks broke off between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps that would merge the formats or at least create a unified group to support the long awaited HD format. It is likely HD-DVD’s delay is in reaction to this set back. Ask any consumer what they think of another format war holding them up from getting movies on discs in HDTV and you will get an earful of anger. Rumors have Blu-ray’s launch possibly coming before the Holiday selling season. If they have enough titles (more than 100 and more coming soon) the first format to market might just pick up and run away with the hearts and wallets of an HDTV starved audience.
