The
National Geographic Channel and Fox Networks Group are teaming up to
form a new National Geographic Channel High Definition network set to
hit airwaves early in 2006, celebrating the channel’s fifth
anniversary. The channel was launched in January, 2001 with 10 million
subscribers and has grown today to approximately 55 million
subscribers.
According to the National Geographic Channel, most of their current program production is being captured in HD in preparation for the new network. The channel has also been busy buying more programming in HD so that over 90 percent of their primetime programming will be seen in high definition when the new network launches. A recent Brand Identity Survey by Beta Research revealed most respondents listed National Geographic Channel as the one network they would most like to see in HD. Laureen Ong, president of the National Geographic Channel calls the move “a natural progression for our brand and our network, and we anticipate NGC HD becoming very resonant with our core viewers.” |
