Ray Brown, the bassist that helped define the 1940’s bebop sound, died in his hotel room in Indianapolis yesterday. He was on a tour stop to play a gig at the Jazz Bakery. Brown had played with artists ranging from Dizzy Gillespie to Charlie Parker. He was, also at one time, married to Ella Fitzgerald.
Brown had played golf earlier in the day and had returned to his hotel room for a nap before the show. When he didn’t show up for the gig, band members tracked him back to the hotel where they found his body. Brown lived in Sherman Oaks, California and is survived by his wife and son.
