The digitalbits.com is reporting that the Lord of the “Lord of the Rings”, Peter Jackson, recently alluded to releasing his movies in HDTV formats.

At a Hollywood party for 1500 supporters of his films, Jackson said
"I'm sure most of you have heard me blabbing off in the past few weeks but we've just finished the extended cut of the DVD. I finished the edit before I came over here - these poor bastards at Weta have got another 350 effects shots to do! They're well on the way. Elijah's seen the extended cut. New Line has announced some box set that's supposed to be coming out which I didn't know anything about. When I've done King Kong I'd like to do a proper box set and we've got a whole bunch of material - not of the movie but we've got a whole lot of bloopers out there! When King Kong's out the way I'd like to do a really high definition version with the best possible picture quality."

The “Lord of the Rings” movies are sure to be converted to HDTV for broadcasts, however, Jackson didn’t specifically mention any plans for a release of his films in an HDTV format like D-VHS. D-VHS is the only currently viable way to distribute Jackson’s films in HDTV directly to customers other than over the air or satellite. Due to the wild popularity and critical acclaim of the films it does lead one to wonder if the Blue Ray disc folks were looking for a way to finally launch their HDTV discs – “Lord of the Rings” would be about the best possible titles to start with. In a Hollywood driven by insane sums of cash, never count out Jackson getting a call from Bill Gates to release his trilogy in high-resolution video and audio via Windows Media 9.
