2001 was one of the toughest years for recorded music ever with sales down over 10 percent representing an industry wide loss that was the worst in 20 years.
Unfortunately, the Grammy’s represented much of what was wrong with popular music. Despite boom times for feature films and DVD-video sales, music slumped with a proliferation of boy bands and prepackaged pop garbage (and I don’t mean Shirley Manson). At this year’s grammy Awards, there wasn’t much to get overly excited about in the wake of such a dismal year for music sales. As expected, classic rockers U2 racked up Grammy Statues for Record of The Year, Best Rock Album and more. Urban diva, Alicia Keys earned Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and more. The surprise of the show was the Bluegrass-based soundtrack from O’ Brother Where Art Thou? winning the Album of the Year award. Huh? Many of the other awards were given to very familiar names like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Harry Connick Jr., Sade and James Taylor clearly showing the Baby Boomer bias of the judges. Newer acts that struck Grammy gold were the sensitive rockers – Coldplay, Gen Y rockers - Linkin Park and R&B pimp Usher. The performance of the show went to Mary J. Blige who poured her heart out on the tune "No More Drama."
