Not known for being the hippest music award show, the past two Grammy Awards have seemed more like a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame introduction ceremony than a celebration of the best new music of the year. Last year, Santana paired up with a handful of rising pop stars such as Dave Matthews, Lauryn Hill and matchbox 20 and was honored with eight Grammy awards for his album Supernatural and his smash hit song "Smooth."
The talk of this years Grammys was Steely Dan who, to almost everyone’s surprise, took home the much coveted Album of The Year award as well as the award for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group for their song "Cousin Dupree." Many critics and fans had speculated that Eminem would take home the Album of the Year for "The Marshall Mathers LP." A controversial performance by Eminem and Elton John happened just minutes before the Album of The Year award was given out. A few four letter words were bleeped out and cameras cut away before viewers could see Eminem flipping the bird to the audience, but the performance was lackluster and did not end up being the spectacle that the Grammy’s telecast producers were expecting. Ratings for this years award show were off significantly. The 2001 Grammy Awards was seen by 1.1 million fewer viewers than last year according to Neilsen ratings. Veteran alternative rockers U2, now over 20 years into their career took home three Grammy statues. The Irish quartet took home Record of The Year, Song of The Year, and Rock Performance by a Duo or Group for the song "Beautiful Day" for their new album "All That You Can’t Leave Behind." The only other artist to bring home three Grammys was Faith Hill, who dominated Dick Clark’s 2000 American Music awards earlier this year. Like this article?
