Tevin Campbell, Quest/Warner Bros. Records
| Performance 8 | Sound 8 | If you have wondered what ever happened to Tevin Campbell, you’re not alone. After his debut nine years ago, the impressive ‘T.E.V.I.N,’ and the multi-platinum ‘I’m Ready’ the one-time prodigy seemed to vanish. In fact, there was another album before this one, ‘Back To The World,’ which Campbell himself described as "transitional." However, where Tevin Campbell has actually been is knee-deep in that purgatory between child star and adult artist. Now twenty-two, Tevin may not have the sage wisdom of R&B heavyweights like Luther Vandross or Keith Washington, but he can certainly now shift his focus from bubble-gum pop to R&B balladeer. On ‘Tevin Campbell’ the maturity in his voice and style is vastly evident. The album is consistently strong from start to finish and seems to anoint Tevin as the successor to the torch once held by the likes of Keith Sweat and now R. Kelly. The production here features Stevie J. (fresh from some work with Puffy’s Bad Boy label) as well as Wyclef Jean, and it is deep and well staged. If the next wave in R&B is what you’re looking for ‘Tevin Campbell’ might very well just be it, and this album could easily find a home in your late night rotation. |
