Currently
the world of rap languishes on the fringes. Yes, occasionally it finds
its way to the forefront when one of its lesser talents rehashes a
disco anthem or what have you, but mostly the world of rap just waits.
It waits for more than marginal talent with superior publicity; and it
wonders where all the lyrical gods have gone.
For at least one of the true masters the answer is, to the desert. Not long ago Kool G. Rap, universally acclaimed as one of rap's greatest lyricists, left his home town of New York and set up shop in Arizona. The good in this is move was that now, G. Rap can get down to the business of making great records without any of the madness which surrounded him in the past. The bad news though, became, as they say, 'out of sight, out of mind.' For as good as this album is (which is, in all honesty, very very good), it seems as if no one really cares. Thankfully, we do. G. Rap is in classic form on 'Roots,' his lyrics and trademark lisp are sharper than they've been in years, and there is simply no reason not to give this album a listen.
