MCA Records 97 Performance 10+ Sound 8.5 Axis Bold as Love is not the first record many music historians think of when talking about Jimi Hendrix, but I think it may be his finest and clearly one of the best records to suspend disbelief on a great music playback system. The guitar work is nothing short of sensational and shows tremendous technical development from the1967 album Are You Experienced. It is obvious that recording techniques had improved as had Hendrix's playing and more importantly on Axis, his songwriting had come of age. "Little Wing" and "Spanish Castle Magic" are the two tunes most associated with Axis however "If 6 Was 9" is a defiant, late 1960's protest song. The title track "Bold As Love" is an epic and stretch both Hendrix's playing and Eddy Kramer's production and engineer skills. "Castles Made of Sand" is a textural masterpiece and the type of song that could keep you starting at your Hendrix guitar tabliture for endless hours. This remastered version of Axis Bold As Love is clearly superior to the most recent 1995 release in that this version is the first to be remastered directly from the master tapes. It wouldn't be a mistake to make this your first Hendrix CD nor would it be a mistake to trade in your old version for the new.
