Don’t let the name fool you. This disc isn’t relegated to Christmas music - actually, there are not any Christmas songs on the disc at all. For those of you outside of the Southern California area, KROQ is an alternative rock station in Los Angeles that hosts an annual Christmas concert, featuring a variety of bands over one or two nights. The proceeds are then donated to charity.
This disc contains 12 tracks from different artists, most of which were produced in the last three years. The featured artists include Blink 182, Garbage, Hole, No Doubt, Violent Femmes, Bush and Live, among others. The sound quality is generally good, but while it is fairly even, the sound is not as consistent as it would be from either a studio album or one recorded live at a single concert.
The performances on the album are great. I have been to two of the KROQ concerts and the bands almost always put on a great, energy-filled show. The album starts off with a very vigorous rendition of "Dammit" by Blink 182, which does a great job of capturing the liveliness of the performance as I remember it. No Doubt is another band that is known for putting on great live shows, as is evident from their rendition of "Spiderwebs," which is also included.
The album is filled with live performances of some of the top alternative rock songs of the past few years. Fans of this genre will enjoy the variety of excellent performances.
