Jackie Brown Soundtrack,
Maverick Records
| Performance 5 | Sound 7 |

Rumor is that after seeing 'Citizen Kane' a film critic approached Orson Welles and told him that he'd be best off if he retired immediately--he could never possibly acheive the genius he had in Charles Foster Kane. I reference this only because I vividly recall how well Kool & The Gang's 'Jungle Boogie' worked in 'Pulp Fiction.' And, too, how well it worked on the soundtrack. This isn't to compare the 'Pulp Fiction' soundtrack to 'Citizen Kane,' but more to warn you, and perhaps Quentin Tarantino, that putting out a quality album isn't as easy as it seems.

The single greatest cut on this album is the title track from another soundtrack. And Bobby Womack's 'Across 110th Street' works just as well away from that movie as it ever did standing head and shoulders above the rest of this album. The other songs you'll find on this record can be found on every soul 'oldies' radio station and most regular 'oldies' stations across the country. All right, Foxy Brown's rap (which is fair), The Vampire Sound Inc.'s song, and Elliot Easton's Tiki Gods' number won't be found on these stations, but you get the point. How many more times can I hear 'Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time' by The Delfonics or 'Street Life' by Randy Crawford.
