I don’t know who Tyrone Davis is, but I do know that he is a full-on pimp, in the best sense of the term. Relaxin’ With Tyrone Davis just showed up one day from a record label, Malaco Records, which I had never heard of before. Based on Tyrone’s perfect white Nehru jacket featured on the cover art of Relaxin’, I had to give it a spin. Right out of the gate, Davis sets up a bossa nova groove on the tune "Sugar Daddy" that is irresistibly cheesy. The funky guitar jams as Davis preaches his story of what he’d do and what he’d buy in order to win the affection of his prospective lover. The next cut, "I’m Gonna Kiss You Where I Miss You," solidified Davis as my new favorite R&B star. With a Barry White sense of humor, Davis covers the classic dilemma of being stuck on the road. With lyrics like "I wish I could be home 24 hours a day/We both know the bills have got to be paid/Now when I get home there won’t be much talkin’/I am gonna let my tongue to the walking," how can you not love this guy? As a parting shot, Davis’ cover of the Sly And The Family Stone tune "Family Affair" is stellar. It is completely in the groove, with a raspy and soulful presentation. This CD is a find and I can recommend it to you if you dig on the funk of Barry White, Isaac Hayes and some Parliament Funkadelic. The audio quality isn’t what you’ll find on a Barry White record, and many of the instruments sound artificial in that they are actually synths. Relaxin’ isn’t an audio standard, yet it provides enough entertainment to make up for its sound. On Relaxin’, Tyrone Davis will stop at nothing to get you groovin’ with a smile from ear to ear. It is well worth checking out. |
