For quite some time now, the rap that’s come out of L.A. has really been pretty bad. Having Shaquille O’Neal in the city of angels hasn’t helped. Nevertheless, when we came upon the debut album from the Road Dawgs, we were pleasantly surprised--if you’ll pardon the pun. Granted, that patented West Coast over-produced sound, complete with bells and back-up singers is present here, but over all this album is far better than what’s preceded it of late.

The Road Dawgs come to the world by way of Mack 10, and while Mack 10 continues to do his best Ice Cube imitation on this album as well, the Road Dawgs rise above it and make this album worth a listen. Featuring production by Naughty By Nature’s Kay Gee, as well as guest appearances by MC Eiht and Ice Cube, ‘Saprize’ puts some of the bounce back in West Cost rap. While this album won’t change the landscape of music as we know it, it’s certainly worth a road test if your musical tastes lean toward the Westside.
