Perhaps
you’ve noticed lately that ‘Alternative’ music has stagnated. After
all, how many more imitations of Pearl Jam can the market handle?
Thankfully, where real progress in music is being made is in the area
loosely defined as ‘Techno’ or ‘Electronica.’ The tags Ambient, Dance,
and Trip-Hop all seem to encompass an element of this far-too-vague
genre, and all of these elements are encompassed brilliantly on
‘Northern Sulphuric Soul.’ Some songs feature rap, others soul, and
still others just ambient grooves. From the UK production team of Mark
Rae and Steve Christian, this debut album is one of the better releases
in the past year.
It is recorded, mixed, and mastered well, and features guest appearances
by Jeru The Damaja, the Jungle Brothers, Curt Cazal, and the vocals of
a young Manchester England vocalist named Veba. We find ‘Soul’ to be an
album with just that, one which can provide the perfect compliment to
late night and candlelight.
