Big Calm,
China/Sire Records Performance 8 Sound 8 Sophomore efforts are always difficult, especially when many consider your debut to be one of the best albums of the year. Such was the story with Morcheeba's 1996 release 'Who Can You Trust?' A blend of heavenly vocals and earthy scratches, 'Trust' transcended trip-hop and took its audience to an entirely new level. Yet, as it always is the morning after the hype has died down, the obvious question everyone had on their mind was, could they do it again? Morcheeba's answer, in their own words, "We didn't worry about trying to record part two of 'Who Can You Trust?'" This doesn't mean that Morcheeba has undergone a twisted metamorphoses, become a New Wave band, and will soon be covering Love and Rockets songs down at your local pub. What it means is that in not trying to duplicate their success, they removed the pressure for a sequel and simply made another good, original album.
For the most
part slow and melodic, the versatile 'Big Calm' is filled with vocalist
Skye Edwards' rich voice, brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey's loopy
rhythms, and is mixed to perfection. This is an album certainly worth
adding to your current rotation. |
