Play,
Rave New World/V2 Records | Performance 9 | Sound 8 | This could be the best Electronic/Techno album to come out in the last couple of years. Yet, it could be so precisely because so much of what it is isn’t Electronic at all. Also, for the first time in all of his albums, Moby seems to have put it all together in one complete package. ‘Play’ combines everything from break-beats to instrumentals to what sound like southern spirituals to manifest a flowing, moving, compelling work. Mostly upbeat, but not as frantic as so much of the genre tends to be, this disc is the perfect blend. It flows successfully through all 18 tracks and weaves together a tapestry that is as strong as it is original. Whether or not you are acquainted with his previous work, ‘Play’ should impress any music lover as it is easily one of the best albums of the year. |
