Back In Business
Def Jam Records | Performance 8 | Sound 8 | How long has the world waited to put those four letters back together again? Too many years my friend. After a sticky separation and two solo albums each, the talented two-some gets it back to where it belongs. They even go so far as to remake their classic "You Gots To Chill" complete with "Jungle Boogie" sample and all. The question on the minds of all rap fans is always, 'yeah, that was then this is now. What can they do today?' Looking at this album that answer, for EPMD, is plenty. What this record reaffirms is the fact that EPMD never had much to say and that the buying public, myself included, doesn't really care. If you want political statements or gun-toting 'gangstas' you can just look somewhere else. EPMD's never been about either end of the spectrum from day one, they are their own b-boy niche and this album is just another example of why they never should have broken up. The only minor critique I can make is that PMD only produces two tracks, and Sermon's Def Squad (Redman, Keith Murry, etc.) and Smith's Hit Squad (Das EFX, etc.) only appear separately, not together. Other than that, we can only say 'Welcome Back.' |
