Jerry Garcia might roll over in his grave if he could hear what Colorado mix master DJ Harry has done with the music of nouveau hippie "jam band" String Cheese. Jam bands like Lake Trout and even Phish have served to fill in the musical and commercial absence caused by the end of the Grateful Dead. For The String Cheese Remix Project, DJ Harry utilizes some fresh cuts and happening transitions to output one stylishly smooth and infectiously upbeat house record.

What is most striking about the String Cheese record is that is sounds very organic for a house album. Between the programmed beats and premeditated bleeps are the sounds of a real band. The effect give the record a human feel – a rare achievement for an electronic record. The other outstanding element of the performance of the album is DJ Harry’s control of the tempo and intensity for the duration of the performance. This really separates the men from the boys when it comes to the wheels of steel and DJ Harry is very mannish on these tracks. While the beats never hit you over the head with an oppressive sound, they keep grooving, dancing between riffs of acoustic guitars and manipulated sounds.

This record is a perfect companion for a road trip. It never lets the tempo slow down to the point where you lose the vibe. You’ll be tapping your fingers on the steering wheel for the entire 66-plus minutes. An even better application for the album is as a soundtrack for a late summer party. You can tell all of your friends that these are the hottest new tracks from the burgeoning "jam band" subgenre of house music. They’ll think you are cool because you know subgenres of house music, but take it from me, you can pretty much make up any subgenre you want for house music and no one will argue with you.

If you are looking for an upbeat, far better than average electronic CD amidst a sea of lousy ones, hunt down the latest from DJ Harry. I have given away three copies to clients and friends and have received glowing reports back. They love the String Cheese Remix and so do I.
