VH1 Storytellers/Greatest Moments,
Virgin Records | Performance 7.5 | Sound 5 | Did we ever actually think we would be able to run from the 1980's? Of course not. In fact, as soon as parachute pants and neon T-shirts start showing up at the mall the renaissance will be complete. But, just in case you can't wait for Debbie Gibson to rule pop radio once more, there's a new Culture Club double CD. Yes, it may seem shocking, but they actually do have enough hits to fill two discs. Sort of. Disc One here is a recording of Culture Club going through the motions from VH1's television show "VH1 Storytellers." The best part of this CD are the interludes which, hence the name, tell the stories of how some of these songs came about. The rest of this CD (fifteen tracks, including nearly every hit, and some--say it ain't so--new material) really comes off as a band trying hard to cash in on some semblance of re-found fame. Ah, but then there is Disc Two, original recordings of Culture Club's greatest hits. "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me," "Time," "Karma Chameleon," It's A Miracle," "I'll Tumble 4 Ya," "Miss Me Blind," and even "The Crying Game" all find there way into this thirteen track CD, which is actually pretty good. Yes, the recordings are flat--what 80's pop album wasn't--but these songs have actually held up pretty well. In essence, if you've got any episode of 'Miami Vice' on tape anywhere in your home, still own that neon cactus, or wish the Go-Go's never disbanded, this is a double CD you need to own. |
