Astralwerks Records,
| Performance 6.5 | Sound 7 | While the rest of the musical landscape looks to be so barren, Astralwerks Records has seemingly taken up the fallen flag and is now leading the charge toward water with some of the most interesting music out there on their side. Remember, these are the folks who brought you The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, and Air--to name a few. Their latest entrance to the market is the debut album from Cassius who, like Air, hail from France. However, unlike their labelmates, Cassius’ sound is pure American House. At times on ‘1999’ you can hear a distinctive French influence, but mostly this album sticks to high-energy House music cut into radio-sized bites. From a diversity standpoint, this is not the best this label has to offer. The album is good, if neither very layered nor very imaginative, and it does satisfy its niche quite well. Yet, Astralwerks’ Fatboy Slim and Air will most likely enjoy a more mainstream appeal than will Cassius. This is not to say that radio play is a sign of good music, but it is to say that ‘1999’ is much more for the devout House listener than the casual fan. Give this album a spin before you take it to the register. |
