| Performance 8 | Sound 7.5 | Reunited for the first time since their self-titled debut, Sadat X, Lord Jamar, Grand Puba, and DJ Alamo have returned, by their own accounts, to save the world of rap from weak MC's. Amazingly enough, this quartet hasn't lost a step. If someone were to tell you that their last album together was actually released eight years ago, you'd probably call them a liar and kick them out of your house, but it's true. Thankfully, this crew realized that while they may be good as a trio, the addition of Grand Puba makes Brand Nubian an elite ensemble. Don't get us wrong, as is the case on any Brand Nubian album, there are a few songs (out of the seventeen included) that never should have made the cut. Nevertheless, tracks such as the DJ Premier produced "The Return," "Maybe One Day" featuring Common, and "I'm Black And I'm Proud" make this album one of the pleasant surprises of the year. Brand Nubian often say, "Do The Knowledge," well, we say, do the purchase. |
