Performance Quality = 6.5 Sound Quality = 8.5 Bob Mintzer's Latin From Manhattan takes the ambitious challenge of creating a recording of a medium scale big band to the highest audiophile standards. The results are impressive. The recording is as resolved as you can find featuring the most deep soundstage coupled with quick moving, highly detailed Latin percussion from John Riley (drums) and Louis Bauzo (percussion). Latin From Manhattan features nine original songs including a cover of Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va" which was made ever-present by guitar legend Carlos Santana. The downside of Latin From Manhattan is that the recording is better than the performance as you will find with 9 of 10 "audiophile" grade records. This leaves a lot to listen for, thus Latin From Manhattan may well become a standard for which you judge your high end music system. Look to the cuts "Acha" and "El Caborojeno" as performance highlights featuring well arranged and magnificently recorded Latin big band. |
