With HD DVD making more and more advances can Blu-ray technology survive another delay in the launch of it’s hardware? Sony has announced the delay of its BDP-S1 Blu-ray player, marking another setback in the eagerly awaited Blu-ray launch.

The on sale date for Sony’s Blu-ray player, as stated on sonystyle.com is “on or around August 15th, 2006”. The previous release date was set for sometime in July. The July release was already a delay from the June 30th date.

The announcement of this delay means that Sony’s first Blu-ray device may be their RC300 VAIO desktop, which is expected to retail for $3,500. However, sonystyle.com only shows a preview of this product, with no potential release date listed. Then again, at this rate perhaps Sony Playstation 3 in November will be the first Sony hardware Blu-ray release. There are apparently no guarantees in Blu-ray hardware technology until it physically hits store shelves.

Blu-ray software titles are still scheduled for release June 20th. As it stands now, Samsung’s Blu-ray player is our only hope in being able to view the first Blu-ray titles, assuming it hits stores on time. Samsung’s player is currently set to hit the market five days after the first Blu-ray titles, leaving consumers plenty of time to read ALL the information, front, back, spine, and booklets of their first Blu-ray titles before actually viewing them.
