Sure other options exist, but let's be honest here – Netflix has been running essentially uncontested for years now. Amazon has a good service, but it doesn't seem to be hurting the reigning champ. A strong competitor is on the way though, and it's coming at the end of the year. That competitor is the current big boy of the disc rental business, Redbox. Redbox Instant is a subscription based service that will launch at the end of the year, providing customers with both kiosk rentals and streaming content. There aren't any details yet on the cost, but we do know that subscribers will have a set number of kiosk rentals a month. Whether Blu-ray and games count as more than one is as of yet unannounced. Redbox Instant is currently undergoing an internal test with 500 employees. The service is expected to have a public test later this year and a full launch by December. |
