We’ve been consistently impressed with Samsung’s high-end TVs. This year’s 8000 models are especially slick, with crazy thin bezels and outstanding pictures. That’s nice and all, but it doesn’t matter unless all of that turns into sales. Samsung has been losing sales over the last year or so, resulting in an atrocious second quarter. The whole flat-panel market is a bit rough right now and Samsung has announced cuts in TV production, just like LG before them.
The difference between LG’s cut and Samsung’s cut is that Samsung is rumored to be eliminating 80 percent of their TV production, focusing instead on phones and tablets. That’ll bring them from around 1.3 million TVs a year to between 200,000 and 300,000. Samsung currently holds the biggest part of the LCD market, so if this rumor is true, we’re likely to see a pretty big shakeup in 2012. |
