Folks that appreciate a good TV - a really good TV - hold Pioneer in incredibly high regard. The Kuro series of plasmas is still the one that sets the standard for deep black levels and Pioneer's reputation is still strong years after the company exited the TV market. Those Pioneer Elite sets are coming back with help from Sharp.  We're not getting a plasma, which may disappoint some fans, but the LED backlit LCD that's being offered sounds impressive.  It packs the same yellow sub-pixel that Sharp is known for, as well as full LED backlighting and local dimming of those LEDs.

The set offers connectivity to online streaming services, 3D functionality and is Skype ready, but that's all the sort of thing you'd expect to find in any modern TV.  It also boasts Elite Advantage LiveSM, which lets you connect to a live advisor who can offer services like setup, picture adjustment and calibration. You can also adjust the THX certified display with Elite Pure Mode, which replicates the look of older Elite TVs. Of course, the real test isn't what's on the paper, but how the sets look when you're sitting in front of them.  The 60 inch model will be hitting select high-end retailers next week with a price tag of $5,999 while the 70 inch model comes later this month for $8,499.

Give me a break  - Why even try?   |2011-08-05 13:53:35
What is the point of even trying to re-enter the TV market with an LCD OEM'd out
to try and live up to legacy of the infamous Kuro plasma?

I have two Kuros on
the wall at home and I'm sorry but no hyper-realistic looking (albiet great at
showing animated movies) LCD is ever going to get close to reproducing the
cinematic qualities of the Kuro plasmas. This is another poor attempt at
trademark revitalization. Didn't work with Cello(Matthew-James) and I doubt it
will work with these.

Let's be honest -- Elite is now Sharp's premium line of LCD TVs and has nothing
to do with Pioneer's Kuro plasma sets outside of the name. If you want anything
close to a Kuro set, look at Panasonic's or Samsumg's premium plasma sets.
