Traditionally, mid-range sets between 40 and 49 inches havedominated the market, but in the first quarter of 2011 there has been adefinite shift toward larger sets. The folks at market research firm iSuppli have crunched the numberson TV sales in the first quarter of 2011 and come to the conclusion that largersets are on the rise.

Compared to last year, when they accounted for 20.2 percent of all sales, sets above 50 inches made up 22.7 percent of all televisions sold.  By comparison, in the first quarter of last year, sets between 40 and 49 inches made up 41 percent of the market.  In the first quarter of this year, the popular category dropped to 39.5 percent.

One of the most obvious reasons for the change is the ever decreasing cost of technology.  Thanks to lowering television prices, more people are able to make the leap to a 50 or 60 inch set when they wouldn't have been able to in years before.

If this trend towards larger sets continues we could be seeing a shift in the industry, further increasing the maximum television size to meet consumer demand.
