Connected TVs Make Up 20 Percent of Market - Emerging Countries Will Drive That Higher

Typically when we think about those buying the fanciest new TVs we think about customers the USA, Japan and highly developed countries in Western Europe.  That's a big piece of the market to be sure, but the next big connected TV push could come from an unexpected place.

In a recent study, DisplaySearch found that Eastern European countries may be a driving force in connected TVs over the next few years thanks to excellent internet and a demand for content.   The analysts expect the market to grow from 2.5 million sets sold in 2010 to 10 million in 2014 - a significant jump.

DisplaySearch also says that the connected TV market will start to fragment, with at least two distinct groupings.  The first will be the very basic type of connected TV that's common today.  These sets will be adapted by those that prefer to enjoy TV as a passive experience. The second type will be smart TVs that act as a portal for content, rather than as a TV with a few extra perks.  With upgradability and deeper functionality possible, these sets would likely be adapted by younger, more tech-savvy users.
