The PlayStation 3 videogame console has officially reached the 50 million mark in sales.  That's a strong number that puts them in close competition with Microsoft who reported 50 million sales just three months ago. While the numbers still put the console in third place, the numbers are very encouraging to those who want to move the home theater market forward  from DVD.

Of those 50 million PS3's sold, many of them went to households that would not have picked up a Blu-ray player otherwise. It's also worth considering that the PS3 was considered to be one of the best Blu-ray players on the market for quite some time.  Even years after its release it's still up to date and boasts built in Wi-Fi, video and audio streaming capabilities, and regular firmware updates.

Manufacturers and studios pushing 3D have plenty of reason to be excited as well.  Thanks to a firmware update earlier this year, the PS3 became capable of handling 3D Blu-rays and 3D videogames.  With 50 million sold, the PS3 is certainly the most popular 3D Blu-ray player around.
