Walt Disney Studios has some big plans for the future. They've got new releases coming to Blu-ray, a whole new all-access initiative and a digital distribution system to work out. The company seems to be going for a self-sustaining business model without having to rely too much on rental and streaming services.
Because of this, and almost certainly because of the amount of money being raked in by both companies, Disney has increased the cost of discs to both Redbox and Netflix. Newly released discs will run $17.99 each, with a price drop after six weeks. It doesn't seem likely that Redbox will change strategies, but since Netflix is clearly moving away from physical media it's difficult to tell what the streaming service will do. |
