We've been hearing about BDXL for a while now, and it really seemed like the sort of thing that wouldn't be coming to the US.  Since most Americans prefer their DVR or hard drive to burned Blu-rays, the BDXL seemed just a bit too niche for this market.

Pioneer surprised us all with the release of the BDR-206MBK.  Not only is it available, it's available in a major retailer - Fry's Electronics - and at the very reasonable price of $199.

The BDR-206MBK is capable of reading and writing to Blu-ray discs of all types, including the 100GB triple layer and 128GB quadruple layer BDXL discs.  Of course, it can handle CDs and DVDs as well, making it an incredible capable drive.

In addition to getting the drive itself, if you pick up a BDR-206MBK now, you'll also get a triple layer BDXL disc in the box with it, so you can get started as soon as you install the drive.

You can find the new BDR-206MBK at Fry's, as well as in Pioneer's online store.
