Just when it seemed like Blu-ray players were packed with all the technology they could withstand – 3D, Wi-Fi, streaming capabilities and more – LG upped the ante with Wi-Fi Direct.

Wi-Fi Direct allows the upcoming BD690 Blu-ray player to communicate with Wi-Fi devices without the need for a wireless router in the middle.  If you want music from your iPhone for example, rather than having to connect both devices to the same network, you can simply pull it from the iPhone directly with the BD690.

The great thing about Wi-Fi direct is that only one device needs to have it to make it work.  If you've got Wi-Fi enabled devices around your house, the BD690 will work with them without issue.  It's a great new technology that's bound to mean big things for home theaters.

LG doesn't have any pricing or release date information available for the BD690 yet, but you can expect more in the next few months.
