One of the latest trends in home theater, second to the rise of 3D of course, is the integration of non-traditional devices for remotes.  The most common of these is the incredibly popular iPhone, which can be used as a touchscreen controller for many components.

Onkyo is the latest company to add Apple device functionality to the list with a new app that's set to launch in early 2011.  It's designed to allow iPhones and iPod Touches the ability to control Onkyo's entire 2011 line of receivers, as well as some older models to.

If you've got an Onkyo receiver from the xxx8 series, you'll be able to use your Apple device to control most of what your receiver can do, and just about all of the standard day-to-day operations.  If you're using a receiver from the xxx7 series, you'll get iPhone functionality, but will be more limited in what you can do with it.

In order to control your device with an Apple device, you'll need to have it connected to the same network, since that's how the iPhone and iPod will communicate with it.

Expect more on the app as the launch date of January 2011 comes closer.
