There was a time in the last year or two when it looked like the game was up for plasma televisions.  They weren't selling well thanks to early issues with burn-in which lead to the spreading of quite a bit of misinformation throughout consumer circles.

Things have clearly gotten better, as sales have picked up significantly.  While third quarter LCD television sales grew by 16 percent from the previous quarter, plasma sales have increased by 28 percent.

The largest improvement was in a category that might come as a surprise – 720p sets.  42 inch 720p plasmas increased in sales by 27 percent while 50 inch plasmas went up by an astounding 60 percent.

"In this recession, consumers care more about keeping money in their wallets than having a higher specced product," says Tamaryn Pratt, researcher for Quixel Research who provided the numbers.  "Hopefully it is clear by now that the HD 720p segment is not dead yet for larger sized TVs."
