One of the biggest problems with selling higher end gear out of a brick and mortar store is that folks on the internet can do it cheaper.  Not better, of course, since customers can't demo a system or get that one-on-one experience, but cheaper.

Sony's well aware of that and made sure that their recently released ES line catered to their authorized dealers by disallowing it for sale on the internet.  Slowly but surely the gear started to show up online though, cutting into the profits of Sony's authorized dealers.

"In July we took a snapshot of the situation and we had 219 unauthorized dealers selling these products," explains Jon Lin.  After sending out cease and desist letters, they're down to 121.

Lin says that Sony is going to continue to pursue the remaining online sellers, but he doesn't expect to be able to eliminate them all.  "Will we ever get to zero? No, but we do have an expectation that we’ll make it a very different climate."
