You may not be familiar with Silverlight, but it's essentially Microsoft's way to stream video.  It's nice and quick, capable of streaming high definition content and it works pretty flawlessly.  If you've watched movies on Netflix or checked out the Olympics online, you've used Silverlight.

It's pretty good when it comes to video quality, but stereo audio will only get you so far.  SRS announced earlier this week that 5.1 surround sound is finally ready for use with Silverlight.  As Microsoft's Brad Becker puts it, "Multichannel audio takes the premium media experiences offered by Silverlight to the next level."

There's no word yet on when Netflix will implement the changes that bring surround sound.  The company has promised 5.1 surround by the end of 2010 and it looks like they're well on the way.

Paul Congdon  - Silverlight does much more   |2010-09-10 19:17:27
Silverlight is much more than just a way to stream video, it's a robust
development platform for the web. Many Silverlight applications don't even use
the video elements of the platform but when needed it's sure a nice way to
stream video to the users.
